80's Artists #1

The tag at the top of my blog says "art" in it so I figured it was about time to talk art. This is the first part in a 6 part series on my favorite comic artist of the 1980s (what you thought I'd be comparing monet and manet?).

#1 Walt Simonson

I think it's fair to say that, as an artist, Walt Simonson is everything I want to be. He's classic and innovative all at the same time. His penciling style is energetic and dynamic but never messy or complicated Most of his lines look effortless. Nothing looks overworked yet everything looks perfect. Oh sure, stare hard enough and you'll find problems, but within the composition of the picture things just looks perfect.

As an artist He knows how to titillate but he doesn't pander. The way he draws Thor is heroic and larger than life, but you won't find impossible muscles on top on muscles or veins that look like they were drawn by mapquest. His women look sexy, but he doesn't draw waists as narrow as their necks or breasts as big as their heads. His artistic style is darn near the opposite of the "Image Style" that exploded in the 90s, which is mindbottling considering how much of his style can be seen in many of those artists.

When I was a kid I was a big fan of X-factor, and while at the time I had no concept of who any of the artists were I know I was disappointed when the art changed after Walt left the book. I really fell in love with his work as an adult after picking up his entire run on Thor from a comic book shop that was going out of business. It's a great run, and really got me hooked on Thor as a character.

I highly recommend picking up any of the Walt Simonson Visionaries TPBs marvel has published lately. Even the collections of Fall of the Mutants or Inferno are good, it's just not every page in either of those is his work. Or if you're ever over at my house you can just ask for some of his comics; )
