Hawkeye, the non-review

It's taken a couple months but I'm finally catching up on my comics. About a month ago I pulled the trigger on moving to a shop closer to my house. Closing out one pull list and opening up a new one has given me motivation to take a harder look at what I'm actually enjoying vs what I'm actually buying.

Which brings us to Hawkeye.

I picked up Hawkeye solely based on the creative team. Don't get me wrong, I like Hawkeye as a character but he was sort of my least favorite part about the Avengers movie (Jeremy Renner rubs me the wrong way) and I was afraid this new take on the archer would be all movie-fied. Well I was way wrong. Matt Fraction and David Aja have pretty much picked up right where they left off on Iron Fist.

Their Hawkeye feels like the same Hawkeye I grew up reading in the West Coast Avengers, all they've done is change the context. Instead of battling Hydro Man or The Masters of Evil, Hawkeye is working a case on the streets of his neighborhood. It doesn't conflict with any of the adventures he has as an Avenger but it still allows for a fresh view of the character. It's a cool book, if you haven't tried it go pick it up. Or just borrow mine next time you're over.

I agree wholeheartedly. He paralyzes a guy by shooting him in the back and steals from crooks, so he has either clearly changed since the old days too. This is the same guy who divorced his wife over her letting her rapist die.

Still it's a great series so far. I am anxiously waiting for the next issue to come out.

Good point about the brutality he uses. That is definitely out of character, however I would argue that the stealing from Criminals to save the building his neighbors live in is vintage Hawkeye. I think it's a nice tip of the hat to both his carnival and criminal past.
