Pac-Man: Come Out to Play

Can you believe they never remade The Warriors? I mean they're remaking everything from the 70s and 80s, how come no Warriors reboot? If I was in charge of Hollywood I'd totally remake The Warriors. I probably wouldn't do it with Pac-Man though. I don't know I guess I'm just crazy that way.

All Hail the New Raspberry Pi

This morning, or yesterday (I'm not really sure I've been drunk off Oscar Fever) Raspberry announced the brand spanking new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. Click through the link if you want all the real specs, I'm just here to give the TL/DR version.

The new Pi 3 is faster, has more ram, is finally 64-bit and has built in wi-fi and bluetooth. I'm pretty excited for the built in wi-fi and bluetooth. In theory that frees up a lot of USB ports. My biggest annoyance with my Pi is that while the box is cool and sleek looking it has like 6 cables running into it, all at very different angles making it look more like a small powerstrip or USB hub, than the super rad video game emulator that it is.

The retail price is still $35 which puts this squarely in the realm of impulse buy, especially since I already have all the accessories, like gamepads and power cables, I need. Now all I need is some time to actually sit at home and put another one together. You know, there's a cold that's been going through my office. Now that I think about it my throat does feel a bit sore..

Dark Souls III: Shadows Ahead

I know zip about Dark Souls I and II other than I've heard they're very difficult games. I really don't have much interest in Dark Souls III but I'll tell you what I do have interest in, mother loving Cyndi Lauper.

So good on you Dark Souls III, you have my attention. However, if your next trailer isn't set to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun or Goonies R Good Enough, you can GTFO.

My Little Resume

I kid you not, I would hire this person on the spot. Sure I've only ever hired people for warehouse and delivery work but a couple of them showed up with actual resumes. I would rather work with a brony than a non-brony any day of the week. Have you ever seen MLP? They teach all sorts of great values like friendship, honestly and teamwork. Someone this into MLP can't be bad.

London Super ComicCon 2016 Cosplay!

Those hip cats at SneakyZebra have put together another cool cosplay video, this time highlighting London Super Comic Con, which I like because they threw the word super in there. That's a very comic book thing to do.

I might do a bit of cosplay for Emerald City Comicon this year. The last couple years I've gone trick or treating with my son dressed up as Han Solo (a super el cheapo version I put together for a Halloween costume like 5 years ago). For the last couple years my son has gone with me to ECCC one of the three days and he always dressed up, this year he's going as a storm trooper and of course he wants me to dress in my Han Solo costume. Now, my Han Solo costume is pretty terrible. It's recognizable but it's not very good. What I might end up doing is wearing like half the costume so I look super casual. My pants with the red stripes look totally legit, maybe I'll just pair those up with a white t-shirt and do a quick spray paint job on my blaster so it looks a little better. I don't know. I want to do something fun for my son but I don't want to embarrass myself either, I guess that's the fine like you walk as a parent.

Bipartisan Links

Civil War Empire stills. I'm really trying to get excited for this but it's hard. I LOVED Captain America: The Winter Soldier but man did I hate the Civil War comic book.

On a side note I feel like Elizabeth Olsen looks like the version of the Olsen twins everyone was anticipating 10 years go. Like all those people that were eagerly awaiting the Olsen twins to turn 18 so they could get all sexy like were expecting them to look like Elizabeth as opposed to the weird Gollum like fashion creatures they turned into. I guess that's a pretty good place to be. You haven't seen Mary Kate or Ashley in any Marvel movies lately..

Larry Wilmore's Ratings Are 55% Lower Than The Colbert Report. As much as I like Larry Wilmore the Nightly Show is damned near unwatchable. The pace of the opening segment is usually awkward, the skits in the second segment are almost always terrible and the final segment with the round table discussion is a flaming garbage fire every time. Keep the name, keep Larry Wilmore and fire everyone else.

King of the Hill: The Last Bipartisan TV Comedy. I'm not 100% behind this article's thesis. I believe King of the Hill had a very distinct liberal lean (Hank's dog was named after Ladybird Johnson) but as far as bipartisanship goes, it never treated conservatives with disdain. At the most there were a few playful jabs, but in general people with traditional conservative values were respected. It is a stark difference to how the parties (and the media outlets they use) treat each other now.

Liberals like to blame conservatives for the general lack of civility in our current political climate but liberals share plenty of the blame. I was one of like 100 people that used to listen to Liberal Talk "Air America" when it was still around and I remember one of the hosts screaming that George W Bush was a murderer and a psychopath. That went on for MONTHS until the host was fired for calling Hillary a bitch when she refused to cede the Democratic nomination to Obama as quickly as the host would have liked.

Anyway, King of the Hill was awesome. That's my purse, I don't know you!

An Original Film Print of Star Wars Has Been Restored and Released Online. I'm going to download this on Saturday or Sunday. I'll let you know how it works out for me.

Portal vs Half-Life

It's the gal from Portal vs the guy from Half-Life, to the death, finally! I guess.. I don't know. Are these battle videos something that really interest people? It's like 2 weeks old and it doesn't have a million hits yet so I'm going to say not really. The thing I found most interesting about it is how well the special effects are done. I'll bet this whole video was put together by less than a dozen people and it looks pretty darn good. Like action movie from the late 90s good, or Action TV show from the early 2000s good. Computers man, is there anything they can't do?

I Raided Some Tombs This Weekend

Last week I finally beat Fallout 3. According to Steam I put in about 36 hours worth of game play, which is WAY WAY less than I put into Skyrim, a game I abandoned about 3/4 of the way through the story.

Quick Review: Fallout 3 is really fun but left me wanting more. Like, it just ended really anticlimactically and you're not left with the option of continuing to play and explore like in Red Dead Redemption. Your only choices are to start all over again or go back to a save point and put off the final mission. I get that they wanted to finish the story but it's a weird decision for a game that's so big with so many side missions.

So after beating Fallout 3 I decided to try out another game I bought for super cheap at last years Steam Summer Sale, Tomb Raider. Sweet Fancy Moses this game looks fantastic. I know sound like a moron talking about Fallout 3 and Tomb Raider when each of their sequels are the new hotness but give me a break I'm just getting back into gaming at a regular rate.

Turns out I when I wrote my mini review on my computer a couple weeks ago I wasn't giving it the credit it deserved. I fired up Tomb Raider cranked all the settings to 11 and ran another benchmark and it clocks in at an average 61 frames per second. That's why I posted the video above. Sometimes I'm in awe of just how good this game looks, and it already has a sequel out that looks even better! I can't wait to try out a few newer games, if old ones look this good I can't imagine what's in store. In fact, I'm really really afraid I'm about to fall into a pc gaming rabbit hole. Next thing I know I'm going to have one of those ridiculous glowing keyboards and everything is going to be water-cooled. Who cares how much it costs, my kids probably aren't going to college anyway.

Unfry! - Do you wanna kill the Batman?

Here's Unfry!, Russia's first nerd rock band with their video Do You Wanna Kill The Batman. Honestly I haven't even listen to this before I posted it. There's like two other things I want to blog about this morning but they're long form rambling nonsense and I don't really have time for that. Plus this had a cute girl dressed up as Harley and I just watched some Batman: TAS the other day, so I have Harley on the brain.

Lets Try Some VR Porn

The "good" people over at Buzzfeed put together this little compilation video of people trying VR porn for the first time. Don't worry, it might be NSFW but they blur out the boobies and dongs. Virtual Reality right now seems like it's the next big thing, which is funny because that's the same thing they said in the late 80s/early 90s. I wonder if it will stick this time or if this is going to be a passing fad like 3d TVs?

Whatever might happen, there's one thing that's for sure. It's ALWAYS funny watching someone using VR goggles looking like a doof reacting to stuff we can't see.

Super Mario Kart... with 101 players!

Ever played Super Mario Kart with your friends? Of course you have but have you ever played it with 100 of your friends? That's what some guy on the internet decided would be a cool thing, so he used some computer magic to create a race with all the regular Mario Karters plus some bonus guys like Duke Nukem and Qbert. It's kinda fun to watch for a couple minutes. I mean it beats working, right?

Daredevil Season 2: Official Trailer

The first "trailer" for Daredevil Season 2 hit the interwebs yesterday. I use quotes around the word trailer because Netflix and Marvel have this thing where they release endless teasers, trailers and first looks until I'm convinced I've actually seen the first episode before it's available. Even this trailer they're calling "part 1", what the hell does that mean? You're releasing trailers in two parts now? Yargh!

As for the actual video, it looks super dope. The Punisher is natural antagonist for Daredevil. Daredevil is all full of Catholic guilt and no mater how much he punches guys he generally doesn't cross the murder line. Punisher is the exact opposite, he has like anti-guilt. To him killing bad guys is a moral imperative and Daredevil is just another sheep that hasn't woken up to the cold hard reality they're living in. This should be good stuff.

Deadpool’s Shocking $135m Opening Is The Biggest Ever For An R-Rated Film. Wow, that's kinda crazy huh? Word around the internet is that Deadpool is actually a pretty good movie and there are already people clamoring for more rated R superhero movies. Here's what I'm clamoring for: More movies made by creative people that really care about the movie they're making. Deadpool took almost 11 years to make, it was a labor of love with a tiny budget. It was the kind of movie that the studio barely cared about but the film makers fought extremely hard over. I feel like those are the kinds of movies people are looking for. You know... good movies. It doesn't matter if they're rated R or not.

A Producer Is Tweeting Descriptions of Women from Movie Scripts and It's Hilariously Awful. Speaking of movies and how awful Hollywood can be...

Star Wars R2D2 Computer Case mod. This case mod is really cool. I wish I had the time or talent to do something like this. Maybe when my kids are a bit older and actually need a computer of their own. Yikes, that's a scary thought. How did I get so old?

Through the Ars lens: Looking at Justice Scalia’s opinions, dissents. Wow, the reaction to Antonin Scalia dying this weekend was super weird. To say he is not well liked in a lot of circles is probably a huge understatement. Some people I know/follow we're downright giddy on social media.

I don't follow the supreme court that much but I knew he was a conservative judge with a rather surly reputation. A couple of the Sunday morning news shows aired interviews with him and I found him to be really interesting. I don't agree with most of his politics, probably at all, but at the very least I understood his viewpoint and opinion. He was so consistent with his reading of the constitution that on occasion he would find himself on the "liberal" side of the argument, something Ars points out here nicely.

On a side note do you know the last amendment to the constitution was passed in 1992? It had to do with congresses salaries. I'll let you make of that what you will..

Wyclef Jean just had the worst Reddit AMA ever. Here's the deal, don't do a Reddit AMA (ask me anything) unless you really are prepared for people to ask you about like the worst thing you've ever done. If you're cool with that, then please go right ahead. However, if the worst thing you've ever done is stolen millions of dollars from a Haitian charity maybe you should just skip it.

Game of Thrones Season 6 Teaser

The fine folks at HBO continued to troll Game of Thrones fans with this teaser that confirms Jon Snow's death. Or does it?

You see they show Jon Snow's face in the Hall of Faces but they sandwich it between faces of characters we know are 100% dead and characters we know are still alive. I'm going to stick with my theory that Melisandre is going to bring him "back to life" thus helping fulfill the prophesy of Azor Ahi, something about being reborn of both Fire and Ice. Or maybe he's really dead, what do I know?

Deadpool Made Like A Billion Dollars

I'm definitely man enough to admit when I'm wrong. A couple weeks ago I predicted that Deadpool was going to be a big ol flop and it's right in the middle of the biggest opening for a R rated movie in history. Good for Deadpool, bad for Marvel and it's attempt at getting all of it's movie properties back to the house of Disney.

Maybe Fox's next Fantastic Four reboot will be a hard R full of boobs and dick jokes. Couldn't be any worse than the last one, right?

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog goes to College

It's still weird to me that Triumph the Insult Comic Dog isn't 100% associated with Conan. Did NBC win him in the divorce? Anyway here he is skewering a bunch of college kids who are WAY too politically correct.

I'm not one of those people that decries political correctness as if it were an attack my very soul but I do think it can go overboard sometimes. For instance, over the last few years I've tried to break the habit of calling things I don't like gay or retarded. I totally get how language like that is hurtful and what's the point really? I can use plenty of other words. Where I draw the line is when you're asked to refrain from language that accurately describes someone or something.

Does that make any sense? It feels like some of these language crusaders have become so afraid of possible conflict that they're almost making the situation worse. Conflict can be a good thing, often times conflict is the only way a solid resolution can be found. Don't ban the word poor, ban the people that think someone isn't worth their time because they're poor.

Whatever, I'm just hear for the poop jokes.

Can't Stop Won't Stop: Fire & Rain

Enough with all the sappy talk about wrestling, here's a new video by Can't Stop Won't Stop. I absolutely LOVE these guys. We need more rappers repping Reno. I don't know why, I just think we do. I don't know if it will really help anything but it certainly can't hurt, right?

Daniel Bryan Says Goodbye

Here's Daniel Bryan's retirement speech from RAW last night, kind of. His speech was something like 20 minutes long and the WWE in their infinite wisdom has edited it down to 6 minutes. I'm sure some dutiful wrestling fan will upload the whole thing somewhere but I don't really feel like searching for it.

I'll freely admit I cried. I know it's a silly thing to cry about, a man who pretends to fight in his underwear for a living retiring. Daniel Bryan isn't dead or anything. He's living the dream, retiring early to raise a family with his hot wife, piles of cash and composting toilet. We should all be so lucky.

It's blog posts like this where I wish I was better with words.

Daniel Bryan wasn't anyone I knew personally but it felt like I did. I guess that's the beauty of entertainment, on occasion you're presented with something unreal that you connect to in a very real manner. There's a cognitive dissonance at work. It's the crux behind the meme "It's still real to me dammit". Ok, I think I'm starting to lose my point. I guess the point is that I don't think we should be ashamed to admit we've been emotionally touched by art and entertainment. I mean, that's sort of the point of it all, isn't it?

Daniel Bryan was a fantastic wrestler, he was one of the best in the world and by all accounts was a pretty good dude. Every time he wrestled it brought a smile to my face. Everyone in the DevilDinosaur household wishes him the best in his future endeavors.

re: Daniel Bryan

It doesn't matter if you knew him as The American Dragon or Daniel Bryan, Bryan Danielson was one of the best professional wrestlers of all time. He's retiring tonight on RAW. If you even have just a passing interest in pro-graps I'd suggest you check out the show. If nothing else it should be worth it for the spectacle. I'll definitely be watching with a giant box of Kleenex.

X-Men: Apocalypse up in your Superb Owl

Fox had a commercial for X-Men: Apocalypse during the big game yesterday. I missed it because for most of the Super Bowl my kids were being terrors. Luckily it was on twitter like 5 seconds after it aired. It looks cool enough, plenty of action and cool looking characters (by the way, "cool looking characters" is my nickname for Olivia Munn's cleavage).

Next time a Super Bowl involves teams I couldn't care less about maybe I'll take the kids to the park. All the commercials are on the internet immediately after they air, in some cases DAYS before they air. Watching the game and hanging out on line reading everyone's hot takes on Cam Newton can't be good for you. I probably knocked like 2 years off my life when Cam didn't go for that fumble and a bunch of people I went to high school with started calling him a pussy on Facebook.

Anyway, how about those cool looking characters?

Run, don't walk to Frinkiac is a meme and image generator that takes any quote you can think of and matches an image to it. It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen on the interweb and I was pretty much on the ground floor of Tom Selleck Waterfall Sandwich.

You don't even have to get the quote right, I typed in "internet computers" and I got just what I wanted. This is a complete game changer.

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The brilliant people at TT games decided the best way to tease the new Lego: The Force Awakens game was to recreate the epic first trailer for The Force Awakens trailer, with a lego twist of course. I know that I have a big soft spot for the Lego games but I can't think of a better video game trailer since that one for Dead Island. This looks hella dope. Also my son said I could get it for my birthday so yay?

Twenty-Four Years Ago Today: The Start Of The Image Comics Revolution. Technically it was twenty-four years ago yesterday but close enough.

Whenever I'm having a conversation with myself in the shower about Image comics, I like to use the analogy that Image is to comics what the Tucker was to the automobile industry. If Tucker had been successful. They didn't invent the idea of independent publishing and creator owned properties in comic books but they were the first to really succeed at it on a broad scale and challenge the status quo established by DC and Marvel.

Second off, how is it that I've slept on Overwatch for this long? That game looks super dope. Like a combo between Team Fortress and Unreal Tournament. I'm most definitely checking that out when it ships.

Archer PI

Ok, I think we've all had enough talk about my new computer. Here's the new Archer intro, which just happens to be a shot for shot remake of the Magnum PI intro.

The Great PC Build of 2016

As previously mentioned, last Friday I put together a "new" gaming PC. I threw some quotes on there because not everything about the computer is new. I was able to keep a couple components from the last time I upgraded (about 2 years ago). The biggest being the motherboard. I've been buying parts since black Friday to help keep this build in my budget. I saved the most expensive stuff for last since I wasn't sure I was really going to be able to finish. We lucked out this year and my wife got the big bonus and I was able to wrap everything up earlier that I had anticipated. Enough of my babbling, here's the stats as unimpressive as they are:

Motherbord: ASRock FM2A75M Pro4+
As I mentioned before I bought this board a couple years ago along with an AMD A6 processor for pretty cheap and it's been a solid board for me. It was one of the first boards to include USB3.0 which is nice. I've never had any BIOS or driver issues with this one. I'm glad I'm able to keep it around for a while.

Processor: AMD A10-5800K Trinity Quad-Core 3.8 GHz
For what they are these AMD processors that include the GPU (that's a graphics processor for the uninitiated) are pretty decent. The old A6 I had allowed me to at least play older games like Portal and Lego Lord of the Rings. I upgraded to the A10 specifically because AMD isn't making these anymore and I was able to grab one for cheap. It doesn't blow the A6 out of the water or anything but it's an upgrade. Of course at this point it's easily the weakest part of my build. I'm going to knock on wood that I'm able to squeeze a couple more years out of it.

Ram & Hard Drive: My computer had 8 gigs of RAM now it has 16.
I bought the cheapest I could find, which still came with a ridiculous looking heat sink and says "XTREME" all over it. My build isn't fancy enough for me to be quibbling over the speed of my RAM. I also upgraded to a solid state HD a couple months ago, specifically a Samsung 850 EVO. It's only 250 Gigs but man is it fast. My PC boots up in about 6 seconds now. I have another 1 TB drive I keep movies and music on.

Graphics Card: Gigabyte AMD Radeon R9 380 GDDR5 4GB
This is where I spent as much as I could. I went by a roundup on Tom's Hardware Guide. They had the AMD Radeon R9 380 as one of their best value video cards and Tom's has never steered me wrong before. Even though this is supposedly a compact card that doesn't use a lot of power it still required me to upgrade the power supply in my rig. The new power supply ended up requiring a new case. Not only was it bigger with like a thousand cords that I couldn't fit in my old case but the only way it mounted in my old case had the fan blowing straight at my video card. It made zero sense. The case I bought was a Silverstone Tek Aluminum Micro-ATX case. It was the least obnoxious case they had a Frys. I lucked out that it had a pretty good cable management system.

So the $64,000 question, how does it game? Very well so far. I haven't had a ton of time to try it out with different games, mostly because I'm super into Fallout 3 right now. Fallout 3 looks fantastic, it looked good before but now all the settings are maxed out it looks a lot better. It's an older game so it's not ground breaking or anything but it looks better than anything I have on the Xbox 360. Portal is about the same, you can tell it's dated but it really looks good. The Lego games my son loves great too. Those games have never been system hogs or anything but you can really crank up the resolution and the colors look great. They used to drop some frames when too many characters were on the screen at once but that looks all cleared up.

The most modern game I was able to try was Tomb Raider (the soft reboot from 2013). I ran the benchmark on it with two different settings. The first on medium graphics and the second on high (not max). On medium the game ran at an average of 59fps and on high it ran at an average of 54fps. The trade off is definitely worth the small dip in fps. I'm definitely satisfied with the results. I shouldn't have a problem playing any modern PC game for at leas the next couple years. My next upgrade will probably be a new motherboard and processor but I have a feeling that this video card will do what I need it to for 2-3 more years.

I'll probably pick up Star Wars Battlefront in the next couple months. I don't want to wait too long, I remember I did that with Battlefield 2 and the learning curve was steep as hell when everyone left playing the game had were hardened vets. Fallout 4 is definitely on my list too, but I have to beat 3 AND New Vegas first.

I've included some random pictures of the processes, starting with a pic of the old case and the rats nest of wires I couldn't wrangle.
